Concept: Humulus japonicus


Women seeking alternatives to hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms often try botanical dietary supplements containing extracts of hops (Humulus lupulus L.). Hops contain 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN), a potent phytoestrogen, the related flavanones 6-prenylnaringenin (6-PN) and isoxanthohumol (IX), and the prenylated chalcone xanthohumol (XN).

Prenylated chalcones and flavonoids from hop (Humulus lupulus L.), such as 6-prenylnaringenin (6-PN) and 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN), are investigated for their health-beneficial and anticancer activities. We thus compared the oral bioavailability and safety of 6-PN and 8-PN in healthy young women and men and investigated their effects on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).

However, Japanese hop and mugwort pollen extracts, which are widely used for the diagnosis, have not been standardized. The annual production of hops (Humulus lupulus L.) exceeds 100,000 mt and is almost exclusively consumed by the brewing industry. The value of hops is attributed to their characteristic secondary metabolites; these metabolites are precursors which are transformed during the brewing process into important bittering, aromatising and preservative components with rather low efficiency. By selectively transforming these components off-line, both their utilisation efficiency and functionality can be significantly improved. Therefore, the chemical transformations of these secondary metabolites will be considered with special attention to recent advances in the field. The considered components are the hop alpha-acids, hop beta-acids and xanthohumol, which are components unique to hops, and alpha-humulene and beta-caryophyllene, sesquiterpenes which are highly characteristic of hops.
